Top trainer Willie Mullins
Here’s a look back at seven magnificent moments in the recent history of the Punchestown Racing Festival.
1: Hurricane Fly’s Emotional Farewell (2015)
Hurricane Fly, one of the greatest hurdlers in racing history, made his final race appearance at Punchestown in 2015. Though he didn’t win, the crowd gave him a hero’s reception after a legendary career that included 22 Grade 1 victories. His presence alone electrified the festival.
2: Faugheen’s Comeback Victory (2018)
After injury setbacks, Faugheen the Machine returned to form in the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown.
At the age of 10, and written off by many, he stormed home by 13 lengths, bringing the house down in one of the most emotional comebacks in festival history.
3: Kauto Star vs Denman Showdown (2008)
Though more famous for their Cheltenham Gold Cup battles, Kauto Star and Denman clashed again at Punchestown in the Punchestown Gold Cup. Kauto Star, trained by Paul Nicholls, claimed victory this time in an epic showdown that thrilled fans.
4: Willie Mullins’ Record-Breaking Year (2022)
In 2022, trainer Willie Mullins achieved a staggering 10 wins over the five-day festival, solidifying his domination of Irish National Hunt racing. He finished the season with 217 winners in Ireland — an all-time record.
5: Sizing John’s Triple Crown Completion (2017)
After winning the Irish Gold Cup and Cheltenham Gold Cup, Sizing John completed a rare treble by landing the Punchestown Gold Cup. It was a crowning moment for trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Robbie Power, making history with three Gold Cup wins in a single season.
6: Quevega’s Five-Time Stayers' Domination (2009–2013)
Quevega, also trained by Willie Mullins, won the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown five years in a row. Her dominance made her a crowd favorite and a Punchestown legend.
7: Chacun Pour Soi’s Spectacular Arrival (2019)
Little known outside of Willie Mullins’ yard, Chacun Pour Soi exploded onto the scene in the Ryanair Novice Chase, defeating the hotly tipped Defi Du Seuil and Duc Des Genievres. It was an electrifying performance that marked the start of a big career in the 2-mile chase division.
