Sustainability to be the focus of August's Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show

The importance of sustainability in farming is to be highlighted at this year's Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show.

“Irish farmers are playing their part by participating in sustainability programmes and have a unique advantage with their grass-based production system,” stressed Bord Bia's Joe Burke when speaking at the show schedule launch and sponsors night in Tullamore recenlty.

This year's show takes place on Sunday, August 11, next at the Butterfeld Estate in Blueballl, just outside Tullamore.

The action-packed programme for 2024 includes many new elements with the expansion of the Sustainable Livestock Village to feature aspects of biodiversity, water quality and the first ever Speakers Corner, kindly sponsored by FBD Insurance.

The new attraction will allow for ongoing discussions throughout the day on various sustainable topics with experts sharing their knowledge.

The first ever four and five star multi breed ram and ram lamb class will form part of a record-breaking number of breeds in sheep section. This section will also introduce the Belclare and Scottish Blackface breeds. The Cattle section will host four breeds including Simmental, Charolais, Hereford and Limousin finals.

The Equine section will launch its first ever presentation area. In the Cookery section the ever-popular Odlums pavilion will return with new chef at the helm, Aisling Larkin.

Show Chairman, Joe Molloy, has thanked site owners Anne Marie Butterfield and Stephen McQuade, car park owners and local residents for their continuous cooperation.

He also extended gratitude to sponsors and said “without their support we would not be able to stage a show of this magnitude”.

FBD Head of Sales-Midlands and Western Region, Pat Gilligan, speaking at the sponsors night, stated, "FBD is proud to be the title sponsor of the National Livestock Show: it is the highlight of the FBD’s busy summer calendar and one we look forward to each year.

"Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show is a wonderful reflection of all that is positive within Ireland’s livestock and farming sector. FBD are proud to be involved in the Sustainable Livestock Village with the introduction of the FBD Speakers Corner this year."

Senior Manager for Meat and Livestock with Bord Bia, Joe Burke, stressed, "Irish farmers are more conscious of sustainability, and the definition of sustainability is basically being able to sustain production and continues to do so in a way that does not compromise the future generations.”
